Soloist evening in the Nydeggkirche Bern<\/span>
The climax of the evening came in Ulrich Schmid\u2019s interpretation of Zoltan Kod\u00e1ly\u2019s Sonata, op. 8 (composed in 1915), a performance unlikely to be surpassed thanks to Schmid\u2019s superb technique, refined sound and identification with the work. The attentive audience was noticeably impressed by his gripping, powerful expressiveness and intellectual perception.

Russian composer Sergey Rachmaninov\u2019s expansive Sonata in G minor with its almost orchestral development and cantabile passages appears to have been created for Schmid\u2019s brilliant playing and emotional interpretation that seemed to come straight from the soul of the cello.

Ulrich Schmid played the cello part in Bloch\u2019s Shelomo with a serious, questioning and cantabile tone, enhanced by nobility and elegance. The singing ethos of his music-making, imbuing every note with a dense, suffered existence, seemed to be reminiscent of Haschirah, the specific style of songs from the Bible. It\u2019s hard to imagine a more dignified performance of this farewell to life.
